A Children’s Hospital Uses Archi-Technologies To Give Better Care To Their Most Vulnerable Patients

Golisano Children's Hospital is a pediatric inpatient care facility located in Rochester, NY. Designed more like a hotel for kids than a hospital, the facility provides a less frightening environment for children. The new facility fills a long standing need for a children’s hospital in the Rochester area. The architectural design look like something straight out of Dr. Seuss’s imagination, with colorful interiors and exteriors in orange, purple, green, and blue hues. The 40-percent-larger-than-normal rooms are designed to cater to families. And the hospital provides nearly all medical services and therapies close to the patient rooms.

The Challenge

Caring for children requires extra communication within the medical staff and various teams of healthcare providers. To accommodate the greater need for family visitations, including overnight stays, a children’s hospital must function as more of a hotel than normal hospitals. The additional requirements and increased burden to provide preeminent care indicates the need for reliable and state-of-the-art communication and collaboration technology for the staff, patients, and visitors.

In addition to working in a space where young lives hang in the balance, our installation team was faced with additional obstacles. Projectors were not specified as short throw and extreme adjustments were required to correct the image calibration. Structural and mechanical obstructions in the ceiling also required the build out of a strut caging. A late start to the AV also created a compressed timeline for us to work with. The interactive space design was mounted very high and the space had too much ambient light for the equipment to function.

Our Solution

Despite the various obstacles we faced and the care that needed to be taken in the space, our team was able to successfully install everything that was required, including audiovisual systems in five nursing staff conference rooms, which included projectors, electric screens, control systems made by Extron, and cable cubbies. We also installed eleven practice office and waiting room LED displays with Extron input panels.

We installed two digital signage locations within the hospital as well including a conference center with three spaces. The first was a small conference space which included a single 70” screen, Extron control system, and cable cubby. The 2nd was a medium divisible conference room with two projectors, two electric screens, Extron control system in credenzas, also with cable cubbies. The third was a large divisible conference room with two projectors, two electric screens, two PTZ cameras, Cisco codec, a control panel, an Extron control system in a credenza, a podium with input plate, and a confidence monitor with control panels.

We also installed a smart board interactive panel with an interactive AV floor projection system, large format projector, custom downward mounting bracket,
motion activated sound effect system in the lobby play area, and a motion activated sound modules.
